End of year message
It has been another packed year at SASM! The final weeks of the school year are always busy ones and we are looking forward to celebrating pupils' learning throughout the year on Friday 18th July with our Celebration Afternoon.
Beginning with a ukulele performance from Year 5 in the playground at 2:50pm. It's not over yet, with the Year 6 production of Joseph and the Technicolour Dreamcoat and our 'Fullness Focus' of Ready, Set, Summer still to come (more about this below). As the year closes, we would like to thank all of our families for their tremendous support and kind words.
Schools are dynamic places and as we prepare to bid farewell to Year 6, we also think of Miss Jervis, Mr Clarke-Rahman, Miss Moore, Mrs Jones and Mrs Staines, there are lots of new adventures awaiting our leaving teachers, including moves to Canada, Hertfordshire, Dubai and Hampshire. Schools are made by the people that make up our community; we thank them and wish them well on the next step of their journey!
The last day of the school year is Tuesday 22nd July, where the school will close at 2pm (no wrap-around care is available on this date so pupils will need to be collected).
This newsletter also contains some notices for the start of term; the new school year for pupils begins on Wednesday 3rd September.
Next week's learning. Fullness Focus: Ready, Set, Summer!
Next week are our final fullness focus days of the term. Each term, the final few days are off-timetable based on a learning theme. For next week, Ready, Set, Summer pupils will be completing some transition activities in preparation to say goodbye to their current year. We will also be learning about river safety and safety around the railway - both of which are critical given Surbiton's proximity to the Thames and main train line. Finally, pupils will be set up on the new DoodleMaths home learning platform, allowing them to access this during the summer.
On the final day of term - Tuesday 22nd July - Year 6 families are invited to join us at the St Andrew's Church at 9:15am. This special act of worship is the formal Leavers' Service for pupils in Year 6.
SASM receives Gold Attachment Aware Award
Our school is built on relationships, with the strongest ones being between adults and pupils. SASM has continued to be a leader in this and we are thrilled to achieve our 'Gold Attachment Aware Award'. The Award is a recognition of a commitment to the steps the school has taken, to become leaders in developing a culture of compassion and nurture.
This plays a pivotal role in preparing pupils to be reflective life-long learners. The award recognises and celebrates best practice in attachment and trauma aware schools and settings.
As one of the outcomes of the work to complete this award, the school has a new version of our relational behaviour policy, which can be viewed on the policies page of our website.
Study Skills Celebration Breakfast
On Thursday, some children from Year 4 and 5 came together for a celebratory breakfast to share with each other what they have learnt this year about their own ‘study skills’. At SASM, study skills are our version of 6 areas of executive function.
These skills help us to perform tasks, plan ahead, meet deadlines, display self-control and stay focussed. During the breakfast, our Year 4 pupils presented their top tips to Year 5 and then everyone played some games to help us practice our strategies for using our working memory and staying focussed.
Thank you to this pupils, Mrs Staines and Mrs Jones for their pioneering work in this area - as a result of which we will be rolling out the TTG as whole class lessons through 2025-2026.
Celebration Afternoon and Rock Squad Concert - Today
Following the issuing of pupils' Record of Achievement via the SIMS Parent App on Monday, Celebration Afternoon on 18th July provides and opportunity to speak to teachers and celebrate pupils' work. Here's what is happening in the afternoon:
2:50-3:00pm Year 5 ukueles to perform in the playground- parents and carers welcome
3:00-4:00pm Parents/carers invited to classrooms before the end of the school day to look at books and celebrate work. Your child's teacher will also be available for informal discussion. Talk PANTS
The Talk PANTS campaign supports professionals and those with caring responsibilities of children, aged 3-11 (including parents and carers), to have simple and age-appropriate conversations, that can help them to keep children safe from sexual abuse.
As part of the Pan London campaign, we will be providing FREE Talk PANTS bags to every school, early years provision, libraries and children centres. This was made possible due to a very generous donation made in memory of Anita Green.
During the summer months the NSPCC will be hosting a series of free Talk PANTS Information Sessions arranged for parents and carers to help you Talk PANTS with those you care for.
In this session we will cover:
What is Talk PANTS?
Parent/carer Talk PANTS resources
Support with Talking PANTS at home

Thinking of giving your child a phone in Year 5 or 6?
Throughout the year, SASM has been working with parent representatives from the Smartphone Free Childhood Movement. From September, pupils will not be permitted to bring a phone to school unless families have attended Smartphone Awareness Training. The aim of the training is to explain the school's approach, some emerging concerns about smartphone use for young people and provide key tips about how to keep you child safe online. The training video will run in the Science Lab at key school events and your first opportunity to view this will be at Celebration Afternoon - from 3-4pm, where the training will be on shown on a loop in the Lab. The flowchart below explains the process:
You may wish to sign the SASM Parent/Carer Smartphone Pledge , where 116 families have pledged to not give their children a smartphone until at least they are in Year 9.
Year 5 Archbishops' Leaders Award
This week, Year 5 classes have been hosting a series of events as the final point on their Archbishop's Young Leader Awards journey. The Archbishops' Young Leaders Award exists to see a generation of young people empowered to transform society. Through work across the half term, pupils have completed lessons designed to develop opportunities for young people to grow in leadership, faith and character. As a result, each class has completed an activity to help others. 5L hosted a cake sale to raise money whilst 5M completed a fun run in the park. 5J are completing a fruit-themed charity run today. All of these events were designed to help an array of charities chosen by pupils.
Year 6 perform Joseph!
Year 6 completed a phenomenal run of performances of Joseph and the Technicolour Dreamcoat this week. Congratulations to all of Year 6, who have really enjoyed honing their acting and singing skills to put on such a brilliant performance. Our thanks to our Year 6 teaching team, our art lead Mrs Hamilton as well as Mrs Morgan and Mrs Hearn, who helped co-ordinate the performances (including an amazing hand-make technicolour dreamcoat).

The new school year begins on Wednesday 3rd September, with the school gates opening at 8:30am. For the first day, families are welcome to accompany their child onto the school playground. Your child's new class teacher will hold up a sign at 8:45 so that pupils know where to line up on the first day. Teachers will also hold up a sign at the end of the day, look out for these to know where to collect your child in the playground.
Home learning - DoodleMaths and DoodleTables - new for September
Following feedback from parents and carers about more home learning for maths, we’re pleased to let you know that we’re now using DoodleMaths and DoodleTables!
A little bit about Doodle
Doodle builds confidence and ability in maths by creating every child a personalised work programme tailored to their strengths and weaknesses. Using Doodle for just 10 minutes a day is proven to help children make three months of progress in just one month! Pupils will be completing the baseline assessments in classes over the final 2 days of term and will be sent home with a login. Then, families are welcome to use Doodle over the summer break if they would like to.
How to get started with Doodle
Watch this video with your child/ren: https://videos.doodlelearning.com/watch/YQXm6ax3vhFeBHPp7H89SG?
Download the DoodleMaths and DoodleTables apps onto an Apple, Android or Amazon device. You can also log in by visiting students.doodlelearning.com/maths and students.doodlelearning.com/tables on a laptop or desktop. Follow the instructions in the video above to get started.
Use the username and password provided by your child’s teacher to log in.
Support for parents and carers
Link your email address to your child’s account by logging in, tapping on the menu arrow in the top left-hand corner and selecting Settings and then selecting Parent details. You’ll then be able to view your child’s progress by visiting parents.doodlelearning.com or downloading the free DoodleConnect app on Apple and Android devices.
Doodle are running free webinars to help parents get started with the programme. You can access them here: doodlelearning.com/live-webinars-for-parents/
If you have any questions about Doodle, please visit help.doodlelearning.com or click on the green chat icon on the website, Parent Dashboard, or DoodleConnect app to find articles and how-to videos on everything you need to know, or to chat with the helpful Parent Support Team.
From September, the school will no longer use Times Tables Rockstars (TTRS) or Reading Eggs for home learning. The diagram below shows the arrangements for home learning from September:
Our maths curriculum page and English curriculum pages also has plenty of non-digital suggestions for how to support your child's maths learning at home.
Uniform update - tie is optional
We're always open to considering feedback and points of view. Following our consultation and changes to the uniform policy in January, we have received further feedback and have decided to make the tie optional for pupils - of all genders- from September. Pupils require a smart white shirt or blouse in the autumn and spring terms, with the option of a polo shirt or summer dress in the summer term. As part of our commitment to making uniform affordable for all families, the only branded item required is the school jumper. However, other branded items are available from PMG if families would like to purchase them. A full guide to next year's uniform is shown below:
Stationary for September - No Pencil Cases Required!
This year, we have been part of an Executive Function project, which considers many aspects to support how pupils learn. One part of this is the organisation of resources, which can lead to an increased pace of learning. Whilst we already provide basic learning equipment for all pupils, from September we will be providing pupils with their own small pencil case, which will include all of the items they need for learning. Our aim to keep all pupils organised, minimise distraction and reduce time spend handing out key resources to pupils. This means that pupils should not bring a pencil case to school with them. However, if you would like to supply pencils, handwriting pens, whiteboard pens and a glue stick you are most welcome to - pupils can put these into their school pencil cases. We're thrilled to be able to offer this to our pupils.
Bikes and Scooters - To be stored behind the MUGA
The property next to the school - 98 Maple Road- is currently being converted into residential flats. We are working with the building company closely to ensure disruption to school life is minimal. However, for a number of weeks in September we will be without a bike/scooter shetler. During this time, bikes and schools can be stored behind our MUGA area. As ever, items are left at the owner's risk.
Clubs
After-school clubs begin from week beginning 15th September. More information about after-school clubs, including how to book a place for your child, will be sent out at the end of the first week of the new school year.
PE days
We're really excited to be working with specialist PE coaches from Moving Matters, who will be delivering PE lessons to many of our pupils next year as well as supporting lunchtime games and clubs. Pupils should come to school in their PE kit on PE days. Next year, some classes will have a PE afternoon, with 2 PE lessons. The PE days for each class are:
3B - Thursday (indoor and outdoor)
3H - Wednesday (indoor), Friday (outdoor)
3N - Tuesday (indoor and outdoor)
4M - Wednesday (indoor), Thursday (outdoor)

In the news this week
After fleeing the war in Ukraine, Yuliia Brykailo moved to Isle of Man with her daughter, Veronika. Yuliia has since written a children’s book inspired by Veronika’s experience of settling into a new school. The story, Veronika’s Treasure Adventure on the Isle of Man, follows a young girl exploring the island and discovering that the real treasure is friendship. Veronika was warmly welcomed by her new school, where pupils even learned Ukrainian words to help her feel included.

Kingston University BreadLab are excited to invite families to join their new GameFit Intervention Study!
We are inviting children aged 7–11 with traits of ADHD to take part in our GameFit intervention study at Kingston University. Participation includes 6 weeks of fun exercise sessions through video games, along with behavioural, brain activity, and fitness assessments before and after the program.
This intervention study is a follow-up to our successful ActiGamer project in 2024, in which children played different exercise-focused videogames that boosted their heart rates and kept them engaged. The games were highly rated by both kids and parents, and over 90% of families who took part liked the idea of using exercise-focused videogames to support children with traits of ADHD.
This summer, we’re building on that success with this 6-week intervention study, using co-selected exercise-focused video games that target focus, self-control, and physical activity.
Help us advance research into lifestyle-based support for neurodivergent children.
Co-work with scientists on a fun exercise experience.
Families will receive £40 as a thank-you.

Road safety on Maple Road
We would like to remind everyone of the importance of road safety on Maple Road, particularly during pick-up and drop-off times, following a near miss this morning involving a member of the public and their child.
To ensure everyone’s safety, please observe speed limits, do not park illegally, use the designated crossing. It is particularly important to refrain from stopping or parking on yellow lines and near junctions, as these areas are designed to protect pedestrians and maintain clear visibility. We also ask for patience and courtesy to make this busy time safer for everyone and ensure our school is a positive force in our local community.
Road safety for children
If your child walks to school on their own, it is important they know how to cross roads, including zebra crossings safely. Please click here for more information about Road Safety for children.

Winter Care
With flu and norovirus cases on the rise, here are some simple steps to help keep your child healthy this winter.
1. Teach good hygiene habits: Encourage children to wash their hands regularly and use a tissue to catch coughs and sneezes to stop the spread of germs.
2. Know when to keep your child at home: Children can still attend school with symptoms such as a runny nose, sore throat or slight cough, but should stay home if they have a high temperature, diarrhea and vomiting. Read NHS guidance to help you decide. Click here to read more.

We don’t think anyone in our community should have to face going hungry. That is why we are pleased to be able to offer our families support in partnership with Kingston Foodbank.
Kingston Foodbank provide three days’ nutritionally-balanced emergency food and support to local people who are referred to them in crisis. They are part of a nationwide network of foodbanks, supported by The Trussell Trust, working to combat poverty and hunger across the UK.
Foodbank clients bring their vouchers to a foodbank centre where they can be redeemed for three days of emergency food. Volunteers meet clients over a warm drink or free hot meal, and are able to signpost people to other agencies that may able to them solve the longer-term problems.
Vouchers can be issued any day and at any time during the school week. These can be either printed or sent to you electronically via your mobile phone. This is a confidential service and vouchers are only allocated by Mrs Miller - School Community Worker.

Changes to School Uniform
Thank you to the parents and carers who responded to our uniform survey. We have been carefully considering how to ensure our school uniform creates a sense of belonging, prepares pupils for the expectations of secondary school whilst keeping branded items to a minimum. From September 2025, there will be the following changes to our school uniform:
All pupils will be required to wear a shirt and school tie in the Autumn and Spring terms- this ensures consistency across all pupils and applies whether your child is wearing trousers, shorts, a skirt or a pinafore. It also represents the transition from the polo shirts of Infant School and prepares pupils for Year 7 and beyond, where they will be expected to wear a shirt, tie and blazer. In the Summer term only, polo shirts and summer dresses will be permitted.
Black trainers (without logos) will be permitted instead of smart black school shoes - we encourage our pupils to be active, from the Daily Mile to lunchtime activities. As a result, pupils will be able to attend from September with black trainers everyday; these must not display a logo. This also means that the same shoes can be used for PE and school uniform, making uniform for comfortable and affordable.
Lost Property
Please remember to label your child’s uniform, lunch box and water bottle. All named lost property will be returned to your child by the next school day. Unlabelled property will be kept for one week only in the school office.
Please send a water bottle with your child...
Its important to ensure that our pupils stay hydrated throughout the day. Please remember to send your child to school with a water bottle. To avoid any mix-ups, kindly label the bottle with your child's name. Thank you.
Parking outside SASM
If you are driving to drop your children off or pick them up from school, please park considerately on the surrounding roads. Please don't park over driveways or over the zig zag lines. This helps keep everyone safe.
Whilst the school is not responsible for enforcing street parking, we have advised our local community to report all instances of poor parking or behaviour to the police.
Uniform donations warmly welcomed!
If your child has outgrown their school uniform over the summer break (including shoes, plimsolls or trainers) and they are still in good condition, please consider donating them to our uniform shop. You can drop off any unwanted school uniform or shoes at the office.
Thank you for your continued support and generosity.
We would like to remind parents and carers that pupils are not permitted to bring their own toys or collectables into school. Not only do toys provide a distraction from pupils' learning, there is a potential for personal items to be misplaced. Please be aware that any lost toys, collectible cards or other play items are beyond the responsibility of the school.
Children can wear watches to school but the wearing of jewellery and earrings of all types is not permitted on safety grounds. Any child wearing earrings to school will be asked to remove them. If they are unable to remove them they will be required to stay inside during break and lunch times and will not be able to participate in any PE or physical activities.
Fitness trackers without smart watch capability are permitted but St Andrew’s and St Mark’s accept no responsibility for the loss or damage of these items. Smart watches, including iWatches- are not permitted due to their messaging capabilities.
