Farewell and thank you, Father Robert
After joining the parish of St. Andrew's and St. Mark's in February 2013, Reverend Robert Stanier has been a part of SASM life. This week is his final week as he prepares to leave us to take up a new parish in Richmond. Father Robert has been a governor throughout his time in the parish and has also been our Chair of Governors for the past 10 years. He has been a huge source of support within the SASM community, especially during the most challenging times. We would like to thank Father Robert enromously for giving up so much of his time and talent to support our school and we wish him every success in his new parish.
Robert writes:
So this is my final contribution to the school newsletter after quite a long time of engaging with the school. Mr Gates has calculated the number of times I have led worship at St Andrew’s and St Mark’s School. There have been something like 200, along with 130 governors’ meetings, 20 teacher interview panels and more. So the school has been part of my ministry here and a time of departure is a good time to reflect on things that may have changed.
Much is the same. The teachers are mainly excellent now, but then they were mainly excellent when I arrived; and many of the same things get taught; children of primary age will always be finding out about fractions and how to put sentences together. But there is also much that is different, and I think the biggest overall change in the make-up of the school has been the growth in the proportion of children with some kind of special educational need.
Children refusing to go to school because of some kind of anxiety was almost unheard of in 2013; now it is something that, for a minority, is a regular experience and that the school is ready to deal with. Many more children now are diagnosed with neurodivergence some of this is due to a decline in the stigma of the label – there were autistic children before, who simply were not labelled as such. However, this does not, to me, tell all the story; there has been a wider underlying increase in neurodivergence, just as there is a wider increase in nut allergies.
It is for wider society to figure out quite what the causes of this may be, but a school is at the sharp end of working out what to do. For our school, refusing to accept the reality on the ground is not an option, and it is in our DNA that the school is an inclusive place where all children can flourish. But in doing this it is also important to realise quite how challenging that is for teachers and staff. Partly it is about ingenuity; creating lessons in which everyone in the class can engage on the appropriate level is possible, but requires teachers to be extremely light on their feet with their pedagogical techniques.
More than that, it requires vast reserves of patience and persistence. And this is where Christianity has quite a lot to contribute. When Paul begins his hymn to love in the thirteenth chapter of his first letter to the Corinthians, he does not preach about how glorious or exciting or wonderful love might be; he just says this, “Love is patient.”
One of my takeaways is that the best staff have not been the most charismatic, the most talented, or the most academically gifted, those all these things help. The best staff are the ones that keep going; that can stick with it even when the child they are trying to teach has just refused to engage for the umpteenth time. They are still trying to teach their best lesson, deep into the autumn term when their reserves are low. They pour out their love into the classes in their care, by consistently doing their best to be on their side, and to get them to learn and grow.
At its best, SASM has done this, and it has been a privilege to be connected with it. God bless this school as it goes forward.

The school community said thank you to Father Robert on Wednesday with a special collective worship. We opened with our choir signing a mash-up of 'On my way' and 'You'll be in my heart' and ended by reflecting on Father Robert's service to the school. This included: leading worship 216 times; being a part of at least 16 interview panels; supporting over 65 school events and being a part of 130 governors' meetings. This is a huge contribution but does not account for the countless hours supporting the team, working on complaints and speaking to external guests. Father Robert was presented with cards and wishes made by every child in our school and a special map of Surbiton to remember his time in the parish.

In memory of Anne Barker - SASM Governor
The work of governors is vital to school life and most often takes place behind the scences, with little recognition. We were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Anne Barker last week. Anne was a SASM governor for decades and led an extraordinary life of service.
Father Robert writes:
I would not normally write a separate communication to mark someone's death in the parish, but Anne is an exception.
While being far from the eldest in our congregation, she was, alongside Duncan Vogler, the person with the longest connection with St Mark's: she and Duncan went to Sunday school together while the church was in its temporary structure in Church Hill Road.
Anne became one of the sacristans at St Mark's in her twenties and continued in that role all the way through till last year when her mobility meant it just was not possible for her.
For some decades, she was not here much week to week, because she worked as a boarding school house mistress, most happily at Benenden School with which she retained a long connection. However, I think a part of her heart always lay in St Mark's. She attended the reconsecration service in 1960 and ensured that the vision of the architecture and vestments of that time was preserved, even through the redevelopment in 2011-2.
To the vicars here, Anne gave the 'Rolls Royce' treatment in terms of preparing for services; one's alb was laid out for us before each service; the altar linens were ironed immaculately, and any extras (e.g. palm crosses, crib sets) were thought of and provided for, long before we even thought to ask for them.
This could come at a cost: Anne's tongue would not spare the person who shifted even a chair out of its proper place, and the emotion she invested in keeping St Mark's in due order was not altogether proportionate.
But Anne's sense of service was extraordinary. This was not just for the Church; she served as a governor at SASM Junior School for decades, often nurturing teachers who were struggling; and when friends got frail, she was prepared in effect to put her life on hold, to look after them, often caring for them for years in the final stretch of their lives.
Anne herself was an only child and her parents were only children; given that she herself never married, she had no real blood family to speak of. Instead, she had a wide range of friends, from church and elsewhere.
Her last years have been blighted by two main things. First, a gradually worsening fracture in her foot, which eventually meant she could walk hardly any distance at all; second, by her sense of denial that anything was wrong with her foot, even when things were obviously problematic. Friends gently and not so gently encouraged her to see a doctor, but time after time she refused; she was convinced that there was nothing wrong, even when all the evidence was in front of her. When she finally did get to hospital in the summer, she was initially an unwilling recipient of help.
She spent a month or so in Kingston hospital and then came home to recuperate where she has actually often been on quite good form, although it was a huge frustration to her that she could no longer drive her car.
In the last few months she did at least consent to fortnightly visits to the orthotics department in Kingston Hospital to manipulate and treat her foot. On a visit there last Wednesday, the doctors found that her foot had got infected and she was given antibiotics. Arguably, she should have stayed in hospital, but she was determined to get home in order to look after "her animals" - Georgie the dog and Basil the parrot - and Anne in a determined mood was a hard woman to stop. And so she was driven home. As she tried to get back into her house, it seems she had a massive stroke. She was then taken to St George's hospital in Tooting, but she did not regain consciousness.
Many parishioners visited her in hospital in her last days, and thank you for those who did; the nurse commented that this must be quite a church because there was such a steady stream of visitors from the church. The nurse was correct - this is a special church - but the visits were also because Anne was a special person.
She died on Sunday morning, peacefully.
It seems likely that the funeral will be on Wednesday March 4th at St Mark's at around midday. This seems a bit far away but is apt because it would have been her 80th birthday. There will be more details in due course.
As it happens, I will be working in Richmond by then, so while I will play a part in the service, overall it will be overseen by William Allberry, the retired priest who lived nearby her house and walked her dog for the last few years, and by Janice.
Anne was a one off, who will be hugely missed.
May she rest in peace and rise in glory!

On Tuesday, 11 girls from Y5 took part in a fun, fast paced basketball tournament at Kingston Academy. They showed excellent sportsmanship skills and played with enthusiasm and determination. The team finished in 6th position. Well done, everyone!

Last Friday, eight of our students headed out for the Girls’ Indoor Cricket Tournament. It was a joy to watch their confidence grow as the day progressed; with every match, they sharpened their bowling, fielding, and batting skills.
More importantly, the girls shone as a team, playing strategically and cheering each other on from start to finish. The highlight of the day? Hearing one pupil exclaim, "I actually love cricket!" as they headed back to school. Well done, team!

On Friday, the Year 5/6 boys took part in an indoor cricket tournament at TKA. The opposition was tough and the games were challenging. Our boys dug deep and supported each other, offering encouragement and advice. They learnt so much about playing a team sport together, developing their batting, bowling and fielding skills as well as becoming more strategic in their rotations and game-play. A wonderful day, enjoyed by all!

As our results show, we work hard to extend mathematicians at SASM. In the last academic year, 55% of or cohort achieved 'greater depth' at the end of Key Stage 2. This is a testament to our approach enrichment over extension. At SASM, we strive to support our pupils working at greater depth through our daily classroom teaching and extra-curricular opportunities. It was fantastic to see this being lived-out in Mr Burley's and Miss Husband's STEM Club this week, where pupils were highly engaged in an exciting equivalence investigation from 'nRich'.

New to SASM - the Times Table Olympics!
At SASM, we recognise that times tables automaticity, the ability to recall facts instantly, is essential for reducing cognitive load. By mastering these basics, students free up mental energy for complex problem solving and higher level mathematics.
To support this, Miss Husband launched our new Times Tables Olympic Challenge during this morning’s Collective Worship. Each week, children will tackle a short, timed quiz. Those who achieve 100% for three consecutive weeks will master their level and be celebrated with a certificate during our Friday celebration Collective Worship.

Little and Often: Short daily bursts (5–10 mins) are far more effective than one long weekly session. Practising times tables can be done on-the-move: a great walk to school activity!
Visualise the Maths: Use Lego bricks, fruit, or counters to show multiplication as groups (e.g. 3 rows of 4).
Skip Counting: Build the foundation by counting in steps (2, 4, 6, 8...).
Interactive Games: Use apps like "Hit the Button" for high energy, quickfire recall. DoodleTables is a great way to practice our times tables!

On Thursday, our Wellbeing MPs visited WellFest. Hosted by Southborough Secondary School, pupils explored a huge 'wellbeing fair' with stalls including expert advice about how promote a positive and healthy lifestyle. Our MPs are looking forward to sharing what they have learned to benefit all pupils at SASM.

On Monday, our Year 6 pupils enjoyed an educational visit to Kingston Mosque as part of their learning in RE. This visit provided a fantastic opportunity for the children at SASM to see firsthand the peaceful atmosphere of a local place of worship they had been learning about in class. The pupils were commended for their thoughtful questions and respectful engagement, as they deepened their understanding of Islamic prayer, community life, and the similarities shared across different faith traditions. It was a wonderful day of learning that truly brought our curriculum to life.

Faith MPs lead collective worship - learning about Langar in Sikhism
Our Faith MPs did a wonderful job on Tuesday, leading collective worship, where they introduced the school community to the Sikh tradition of Langar. As part of our ongoing commitment at St Andrew’s and St Mark’s to explore and celebrate a diverse range of faiths, the pupils learned how Langar embodies the values of equality and service through the sharing of free vegetarian meals with everyone, regardless of background. It was a powerful reminder of our shared values of hospitality and community; thank you to our Faith MPs for guiding us in such an insightful and respectful reflection.

The Football Association (FA) has published a review looking at behaviour in football across England. It wants to ensure football practice and matches are safe, fair, and enjoyable for everyone, including players, referees, and fans. The review encourages all involved in the sport to play their part in supporting and following values of positive behaviour.

Doodle: the 'green zone'
Doodle: the 'green zone'
We have receieved a couple of questions regarding how the 'green zone' on Doodle Maths and Doodle Tables is calculated. Doodle's algorithm creates every child a weekly target number of stars to earn each week. This target is designed to keep children on track in their learning.
This is a 7-day rolling target. This means that if a child completes a significant amount of Doodle learning on a Monday, and does not complete any learning for the rest of the week, the indicator will remain in the green zone until the following Monday, when the target will reset and the indicator will show that they are behind their target.
You can also see if your child is on track to reach their goal by following these steps:

The Mini Market is coming - Friday 13th February
Mr Gates introduced the Mini Market to pupils in collective worship on Tuesday this week. It is a great opportunity for pupils to serve the local community and the wider world by raising funds to help those in need. The Mini Market is also a teamwork experience and teaches pupils business skills. To find out more, please see our explainer below:
What is the Mini Market?
SASM holds a Mini Market each year to raise money for the Bishop’s Lent Appeal, which supports a huge number of charities across the Southwark Diocese (including some in Kingston such as the Fircoft Trust and ATBeacon Project) as well as through their link diocese. This looks and feels just like our PTA SASM WinterFest or SASMFest with one key difference: it is organised and run entirely by pupils!
Children organise their own fundraising stalls and this year’s event will be held on Friday 13th February. Children plan, set up, run and clear up their own stalls. They will be given planning time in school, assisted by their class teacher. The pupils learn about how to work as a team with minimal adult support as well as the economics of running a stall.
What sort of stall do pupils run?
There are lots of different ways of raising money at the Mini Market. Competitions such as 'guess the name of the teddy' and 'guess the number of sweets in a jar' are always popular. Other past stalls have included: biscuit icing; sale of second hand toys/books; handmade crafts; cake sales; nail painting and outdoor games. To ensure variety, each class can have only 1 group selling homemade food or drinks. Please note that there are no power points available so pupils cannot use electrical equipment No nuts are allowed to be bought into school (including sweets and chocolates which have nuts i.e. Nutella, Ferrero Rocher, and Snicker bars) and all homemade food and drink items must have the ingredients clearly listed and displayed on them. Fizzy drinks are not permitted.
Do pupils have to spend any money organising our stall?
The aim of the Mini Market is to make a stall that costs nothing or as little as possible. We speak to pupils about the need to minimise the outlay (money spent setting up a stall) and maximise the profit (the money taken on the day). There is no requirement to spend any money to make a stall; some of our most successful stalls have cost very little money to set up (think 'beat the goalie' or 'guess the baby photo')!
What do pupils need to bring to school?
Pupils should work as a team and bring everything they need to run their stall including a poster to tell people what they are doing and price labels. The idea is for pupils to work together and organise themselves; learning to work as a team without adult support is a key learning point in running the Mini Market!
What is the SASM Bank?
The SASM Bank operates out of the LRC. Each stall visits the bank before the Mini Market opens to collect £1 in small change to use as a float.
Does my child need to bring money to spend at the Mini Market?
Yes please, but not much money is needed because many of the things at the Mini Market cost 30p-50p. The children can have lots of turns on stalls by bringing £2-£5 spending money - ideally in small change. We'll be on-hand to make sure that everyone has a role at the Mini Market, regardless of whether a child has any money to spend or not. All money raised goes to the charities supported by the Bishop's Lent Appeal.
Can our families come to the Mini Market?
Yes! Just like SASMFestivities, the Mini Market is open to pupils only for the first session and if family members would like to attend, they can join us from 10.45am-11.30am. Please bring loose change/cash to spend. We will also be looking for adults to help us in the SASM Bank. If you would like to volunteer to help as a cashier please sign up here!
What happens to the money we make?
All the stall takings are paid into the SASM Bank which will be open in the LRC. The money will be counted and then given to The Bishop’s Lent Appeal.
The planner competition is back!
This week, Mr Gates introduced this year's planner competition. The competition challenges pupils to submit their original artwork for the cover of next year's planner. The prize is simple: the winning design is featured on every pupils' planner next year!
The details of what needs to be included on the design has been shared with every pupil via their Google Classroom and have been included below. We are always astounded by the quality of the entries we receive.
Pupils need to give their design to the school office. The closing date is Friday 13th February 2025 at 3.30pm.

Our school policy prohibits the wearing of ear studs or earrings in school. This is intended to keep pupils safe as getting ear jewellery caught on equipment, particularly during active play and PE lessons, can cause significant injury. We highly recommend families choose to complete ear piercings at the beginning of the summer break to ensure ears have time to heal and jewellery is removed, prior to the start of term.
If your child has recently had their ears pierced, pupils may join active play and PE lessons provided they wear neutral coloured ear tape. This measure is to to ensure pupils' safety.

Executive function - organisation and working memory
Over the past 12 months, we have been teaching pupils about executive function, known to the pupils as 'study skills'. These are the skills we learn to help us to achieve our goals and be successful in learning and beyond.
Our work has included assemblies about working memory, lessons about how to develop mental flexibility and targetted teaching to develop our skills.
Part of this initiative has also included provided every pupil with a pencil case and stationery, so that they are prepared for learning, can get organised and make progress. We have been completing class stationery checks and it was brilliant to see 3H and 4R have every child with all the equipment they needed, winning them a non-uniform day on Friday 16th January.

Smartphones
Whilst this article has been included in the newsletter weekly this year, we have had a number of enquires from families about smartphones following Christmas.
Pupils are not be permitted to bring a phone to school unless families have attended Smartphone Awareness Training. If your child brings in a smartphone, we will ask for it to be collected from the office by an adult.
The aim of the training is to explain the school's approach and some emerging concerns about smartphone use for young people and to provide key tips about how to keep your child safe online. The training video will run in the Science Lab at key school events and your next opportunity to view this will be at the Spring Term Parent Consultations, where the training will be on shown on a loop in the Lab. The flowchart below explains the process:
SASM has been working with parent representatives from the Smartphone Free Childhood Movement. You may wish to sign the SASM Parent/Carer Smartphone Pledge , where 135 families have pledged to not give their children a smartphone until at least they are in Year 9.

Online scams like trust trades and fake giveaways can cause harm and upset to all children, but neurodivergent children are at greater risk of falling victim to scams. Internet Matters have worked with Ambitious about Autism and Roblox to create new resources to help families with neurodivergent children learn and stay safe from scams within games.
There’s a guide for parents, a video for children and young people, plus stories for families to read and discuss together to explore the risks, with practical actions for children to take to help stay protected.

Think Pharmacy First
Most pharmacies in England are now providing the Pharmacy First service.
This free NHS service allows you or your child to get quick access to healthcare advice for the following seven conditions:
Earache (aged 1 to 17 years)
Impetigo (aged 1 year and over)
Infected insect bites (aged 1 year and over)
Shingles (aged 18 years and over)
Sinusitis (aged 12 years and over)
Sore throats (aged 5 years and over)
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) in women (aged 16 to 64 years)
If you or your child has symptoms that suggest you may have one of these conditions, you can walk into a pharmacy and be offered a consultation with a pharmacist in a private consultation room.
The pharmacist will provide advice and, if clinically necessary, a prescription medicine to treat the condition (the normal NHS prescription charge rules apply to people aged 16 and over).

Supporting Our Families
Supporting Our Families
We don’t think anyone in our community should have to face going hungry. That is why we are pleased to be able to offer our families support in partnership with Kingston Foodbank.
Kingston Foodbank provide three days’ nutritionally-balanced emergency food and support to local people who are referred to them in crisis. They are part of a nationwide network of foodbanks, supported by The Trussell Trust, working to combat poverty and hunger across the UK.
Foodbank clients bring their vouchers to a foodbank centre where they can be redeemed for three days of emergency food. Volunteers meet clients over a warm drink or free hot meal, and are able to signpost people to other agencies that may able to them solve the longer-term problems.
Vouchers can be issued any day and at any time during the school week. These can be either printed or sent to you electronically via your mobile phone. This is a confidential service and vouchers are only allocated by Mrs Miller - School Community Worker.

Free School Meals
Free School Meals
If your child is eligible for free school meals but you prefer to provide them with packed lunches, it's still important to register. By doing so, the school receives additional funding called Pupil Premium which helps support your child in other ways.
Once you have registered for free school meals and we have received confirmation that you are eligible, your child will then be able to attend an enrichment club after school free of charge, as well as one session at our after school club. They will also qualify for the Holiday Activity and Food Programme, this is also known as FUEL (which stands for ‘Feed Ur Everyday Lives’) This programme offers free places at holiday clubs during the Easter, summer and Christmas breaks.
Children can enjoy 4 sessions during Easter, 16 sessions over the summer and 4 in winter, with lunch provided at the club. There are lots of clubs and activities to choose from across a range of dates, time and locations. Some activities include: cycling; film-making; yoga; technology and coding; skateboarding; art and crafts; cooking; indoor climbing; and lots of sports such as cricket, football, netball and rugby.

Additional Funding for low-income households
The Department of Work and Pensions has made additional funding available for low-income households in Kingston who meet the criteria and are struggling to afford food, fuel, utility bills and other essentials. The expectation is that the fund should be used to support households in the most need; particularly those who may not be eligible for other government cost-of-living support. If your household has received help through any of the previous rounds of the Household Support Fund, we may not be able to issue any further funding.

Together Thursdays
What are Together Thursdays sessions? These sessions deliver opportunities to socialise and gain new skills, self confidence and make friends.
All activities are free, all refreshments and lunch are free, community larder with free food supplies. Conversations, fun and social interactions are free. Visiting Together Thursdays is free.

Kingston Young Carers' Project
Who is a young carer? A young carer is someone aged 18 or under who helps to look after someone at home who needs extra support or care. This may be a sibling, parent/carer or other relative that lives at home with you.
We have a team dedicated to supporting the needs of young carers (aged 5-18), with a wealth of experience and expertise in issues which affect their lives. We provide:
information and advice, including 1-to-1 support
opportunities to meet other young carers
fun activities, outings and breaks away from home
regular drop ins
awareness raising of the needs of young carers, particularly in schools
advocacy and whole family support
quarterly newsletter

With flu and norovirus cases on the rise, here are some simple steps to help keep your child healthy this winter.
1. Teach good hygiene habits: Encourage children to wash their hands regularly and use a tissue to catch coughs and sneezes to stop the spread of germs.
2. Know when to keep your child at home: Children can still attend school with symptoms such as a runny nose, sore throat or slight cough, but should stay home if they have a high temperature, diarrhea and vomiting. Read NHS guidance to help you decide. Click here to read more.

Lost Property
Please remember to label your child’s uniform, lunch box and water bottle. All named lost property will be returned to your child by the next school day. Unlabelled property will be kept for one week only in the school office.

Parking outside SASM
If you are driving to drop your children off or pick them up from school, please park considerately on the surrounding roads. Please don't park over driveways or over the zig zag lines. This helps keep everyone safe.
Whilst the school is not responsible for enforcing street parking, we have advised our local community to report all instances of poor parking or behaviour to the police.
Uniform donations warmly welcomed!
If your child has outgrown their school uniform over the summer break (including shoes, plimsolls or trainers) and they are still in good condition, please consider donating them to our uniform shop. You can drop off any unwanted school uniform or shoes at the office.

We would like to remind parents and carers that pupils are not permitted to bring their own toys or collectables into school. Not only do toys provide a distraction from pupils' learning, there is a potential for personal items to be misplaced. Please be aware that any lost toys, collectible cards or other play items are beyond the responsibility of the school.

Children can wear watches to school but the wearing of jewellery and earrings of all types is not permitted on safety grounds. Any child wearing earrings to school will be asked to remove them. If they are unable to remove them, they will be required to stay inside during break and lunch times and will not be able to participate in any PE or physical activities.
