Class Christmas Collective Worships start on 9th December
Next week is assessment week
- This Week -
As mentioned in our newsletters previously and as per our digital calendar, our Christmas Class Collective Worships begin next week! We look forward to welcoming families into school throughout December to share in this special festive celebration.
Each class will have the opportunity to share what they have been learning and reflect on the true message of Christmas. This is a wonderful chance for the children to showcase their developing speaking skills and share some of the Christmas songs they have been practising in their music lessons. It's a key moment for us to come together as a community to celebrate the festive story.

Summative standardised assessments are conducted termly at SASM. These are low-stakes assessments, delivered in classrooms, which help inform our next steps in teaching. This is taking place for all year groups next week (Monday 8th - Friday 12th December)
Parents and carers will be sent the outcomes of autumn term assessments via Arbor in January. More information about the assessment results will be included within the report.
Tomorrow, Friday 5th December, is SASM WinterFest. It is a festive non-uniform day and the children can wear Christmas jumpers. Please do remember that pupils will need a warm/waterproof coat as there will be outside stalls and these activities will continue in light rain.
The event takes place during the afternoon and is for pupils only, with pick up at normal time. We have now raised £3000 through wristband sales; if you have not yet purchased a wristband, they are available via the school shop in Arbor. We will also be accepting cash (exact amounts only please!) between 08.30-08.50am tomorrow morning.
Thank you to all our parent helpers; we couldn't run the event without you!
At SASM, we believe in making a positive impact on our local community, as well as supporting national and global causes. Every year, we choose three charities to support: a local charity, a national charity and a global charity.
Our Chosen Charities So Far
Global Charity: We consistently support the Bishop’s Lent Appeal.
National Charity: Our student Advocacy MPs recently voted to support Children in Need, for which we successfully raised over £200 in November!
Your Child Can Choose Our Local Charity!
We are excited to launch a competition across the whole school to find a local charity we can support this year! This is a wonderful opportunity for your child to learn about local issues and champion a cause that is meaningful to them.
🎥 How to Enter the Competition 🎥
The competition is open to all children, who can work on their own or in a group.
Choose a Local Charity: Help your child select a local charity they are passionate about. This could be an organisation that is particularly special to your family.
Film a Video: Your child needs to film a short video explaining:
Why they would like to raise money for that specific charity.
Why they think the charity's work is important to our community.
Submission: The completed video must be submitted via the assignment posted by Miss Woodward on your child's Google Classroom page.
The video must be no longer than 2 minutes.
Closing Date: All entries must be submitted by Monday 8th December.
Trouble Uploading? If you have any difficulties saving the video to Google Classroom, it can be sent to Miss Woodward via the school office.
Get ready to Doodle! From today, your pupils can start opening the doors on their DoodleMaths Winter Calendars ❄️
By completing an exercise each day, they'll unlock a door on their calendar. They'll find a seasonal surprise hiding behind each one – and if they open them all, they'll receive a festive virtual badge! 🎁
The Winter Calendar has arrived in Doodle, a seasonal event where your child can earn wintery in-app rewards by Doodling 'little and often'!
From now until the 24th of December, your child can open the calendar doors by completing at least one exercise a day in DoodleMaths.
They'll find festive goodies hiding behind each one – and if they open them all, they'll receive a virtual Winter Calendar badge!
The Year 6 girls' football team participated in the Kingston competition on Wednesday, 3rd December. The girls represented the school in a sporting and competitive manner, winning all of their first round games. In the cup round, they progressed to the semi-finals, finishing at a very ambitious 3rd place overall.
'Even though we didn't win the whole tournament, I really enjoyed taking part and I loved playing against other teams in the Kingston Borough. I had a really good team and we won 3rd place out of 16 schools.' - Sienna 6MC
Well done, we're very proud of you all.
What a wonderful afternoon our school choir had performing for the Kingston u3a during their Christmas Lunch today!
Our pupils were delighted to be invited to Glenmore House to welcome the u3a members with a selection of cheerful festive songs. The children performed beautifully, and their enthusiastic singing truly brought a joyful start to the luncheon and the festive season.
We are incredibly proud of their hard work and are so pleased they had the opportunity to share their talents and contribute to such a lovely community event. Thank you to Kingston u3a for the warm welcome and for giving our children this chance to shine! You can find out more about u3a here
Christian of 3B, showed amazing skills and won his kickboxing competition. He showed us all his medal. Well done Christian!
Our final ECO refill shop of 2025 will be THURSDAY 18th December. Come and buy some Christmas gifts and look after our planet!
We will be open at drop off and pick up on the playground just outside the hall and everyone is welcome. Please bring your empty 500 ml bottles and we can refill them with our amazing products. If you don't have any spare bottles, don't worry as we will have some we can give you. Please remember that our our shop is cash only.
We are looking forward to seeing you at our shop.
Since our ECO shop opened last year, we have saved 199 plastic bottles from landfill.

At Picture News, we think it’s important for everyone to use their voice and have a positive impact on the wider world. From getting involved with our community, to raising awareness for a special cause, each of us can bring light to others. So this year, we’d love for you to do just that! Light up the world by sharing a star containing a wish or act of kindness you think can make the world a better place. If every school adds a star to the Christmas Star Map, just think of the positivity and joy we can create together over the festive season… Please click on the image to find details about how to get involved.
Online scams like trust trades and fake giveaways can cause harm and upset to all children, but neurodivergent children are at greater risk of falling victim to scams. Internet Matters have worked with Ambitious about Autism and Roblox to create new resources to help families with neurodivergent children learn and stay safe from scams within games.
There’s a guide for parents, a video for children and young people, plus stories for families to read and discuss together to explore the risks, with practical actions for children to take to help stay protected.
In the news this week
On Friday, the Princess of Wales will host her annual carol service, which will bring people together to celebrate kindness, connection, and community. The event aims to show how love can link people of all ages, background, and beliefs, especially at times when the world can feel divided. It encourages everyone to think about the power of togetherness and the importance of supporting one another with compassion and joy.
Things to talk at home…
Talk to someone at home – are they interested in this concert? Do you or they believe it will achieve its aim in bringing people together?
Are there any services, concerts, or events that you will be attending during the festive period?
Talk about what ‘togetherness’ means to you and your people at home.
We would like to extend a massive thank you to all the families who took the time to complete our recent Home Learning feedback survey. We were delighted to receive a total of 104 responses, reflecting an excellent level of engagement across the school community. As expected, the feedback covered a wide range of views and insights into how the current approach is working for different families. We are now carefully collating and analysing all your comments and will be communicating a summary of this feedback, alongside any resulting changes to our practice for the spring term, in due course. Thank you again for your valuable partnership in your child's learning.
This Friday is a great chance to start being part of the St Andrew's and St Marks' Church children's choir. The group meets on Friday afternoons at 4.30pm at St Marks church to practise for an hour, with a view to singing at one of the church's big services.
This time around, we're starting to practise singing for our Christingle service on Christmas Eve afternoon.
So the commitment would be to coming to five rehearsals on Friday afternoons from this Friday on, until Christmas!
It's totally free, and great fun. You don't need to have sung in a choir before, or be able to read music; you just need to like singing!
If you want to find out more, contact robertstanier@btinternet.com
It was announced at church last Sunday that the Reverend Robert Stanier will be leaving his post at St Andrew's and St Mark's Surbiton in the New Year to become Interim Team Rector of the Richmond Team Ministry. As and when he leaves (departure date is not quite fixed) he will cease to be the Chair of Governors at SASM Junior School.
There will be time for farewells with the children nearer the time of actual departure, but this is to let you know that the school governors are aware and will be making arrangements in organisation to ensure the school is still well supported by the governing body.
His replacement as vicar at St Andrew's and St Mark's is not anticipated until August 2026, so there will be a short time of transition.

Smartphones
Pupils are not be permitted to bring a phone to school unless families have attended Smartphone Awareness Training. If your child brings in a smartphone, we will ask for it to be collected from the office by an adult.
The aim of the training is to explain the school's approach and some emerging concerns about smartphone use for young people and to provide key tips about how to keep your child safe online. The training video will run in the Science Lab at key school events and your next opportunity to view this will be at the Spring Term Parent Consultations, where the training will be on shown on a loop in the Lab. The flowchart below explains the process:
SASM has been working with parent representatives from the Smartphone Free Childhood Movement. You may wish to sign the SASM Parent/Carer Smartphone Pledge , where 135 families have pledged to not give their children a smartphone until at least they are in Year 9.

Think Pharmacy First
Most pharmacies in England are now providing the Pharmacy First service.
This free NHS service allows you or your child to get quick access to healthcare advice for the following seven conditions:
Earache (aged 1 to 17 years)
Impetigo (aged 1 year and over)
Infected insect bites (aged 1 year and over)
Shingles (aged 18 years and over)
Sinusitis (aged 12 years and over)
Sore throats (aged 5 years and over)
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) in women (aged 16 to 64 years)
If you or your child has symptoms that suggest you may have one of these conditions, you can walk into a pharmacy and be offered a consultation with a pharmacist in a private consultation room.
The pharmacist will provide advice and, if clinically necessary, a prescription medicine to treat the condition (the normal NHS prescription charge rules apply to people aged 16 and over).

We don’t think anyone in our community should have to face going hungry. That is why we are pleased to be able to offer our families support in partnership with Kingston Foodbank.
Kingston Foodbank provide three days’ nutritionally-balanced emergency food and support to local people who are referred to them in crisis. They are part of a nationwide network of foodbanks, supported by The Trussell Trust, working to combat poverty and hunger across the UK.
Foodbank clients bring their vouchers to a foodbank centre where they can be redeemed for three days of emergency food. Volunteers meet clients over a warm drink or free hot meal, and are able to signpost people to other agencies that may able to them solve the longer-term problems.
Vouchers can be issued any day and at any time during the school week. These can be either printed or sent to you electronically via your mobile phone. This is a confidential service and vouchers are only allocated by Mrs Miller - School Community Worker.

Children can enjoy 4 sessions during Easter, 16 sessions over the summer and 4 in winter, with lunch provided at the club. There are lots of clubs and activities to choose from across a range of dates, time and locations. Some activities include: cycling; film-making; yoga; technology and coding; skateboarding; art and crafts; cooking; indoor climbing; and lots of sports such as cricket, football, netball and rugby.

Winter Care
With flu and norovirus cases on the rise, here are some simple steps to help keep your child healthy this winter.
1. Teach good hygiene habits: Encourage children to wash their hands regularly and use a tissue to catch coughs and sneezes to stop the spread of germs.
2. Know when to keep your child at home: Children can still attend school with symptoms such as a runny nose, sore throat or slight cough, but should stay home if they have a high temperature, diarrhea and vomiting. Read NHS guidance to help you decide. Click here to read more.
